The purpose of a complete oral examination is to thoroughly evaluate your existing oral health, to discover any problems, and to recommend treatments or techniques to improve your oral health. It is our goal at Cody Family and Cosmetic dentistry® to help you attain the highest level of oral health, and to help you stay healthy for the rest of your life. The initial exam appointment takes approximately one hour and consists of the following: Health History Your current health status is reviewed and considered as it affects your oral health and dental treatment. Oral Cancer Exam This very thorough examination includes a detailed visual examination for oral cancer and abnormalities of oral tissues. Oral cancer, if caught in the early stages, is easily cured. It exists as painless irregular areas in the mouth in its early stages. As it progresses, oral cancer can metastasize to other areas of the body, and can become life threatening. TMJ Exam The function of your Temperomandibular joint (jaw joint) is evaluated and recorded. Ways to reduce stress to your TMJ are discussed. Periodontal Exam Periodontal Disease (gum disease), affects the majority of adults worldwide. It is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. We perform a comprehensive exam which evaluates the presence of gum disease. Your periodontal pockets are measured and charted. Gum recession, tooth looseness, swelling and bleeding are charted. We offer the latest treatments for gum disease, including painless laser gum surgery. Hard Tissue Exam Your teeth are thoroughly evaluated for the presence of tooth decay, abnormal wear due to tooth grinding, exposed root surfaces and worn root surfaces, tooth fracture and poor tooth positioning. Your existing dental restorations, and the current condition of your teeth, are charted on our advanced computerized chart. Your bite is evaluated, and the aesthetics of your tooth position and smile are reviewed. Many options are available to correct problems found. Oral Hygiene and Habits Review Your home oral health care techniques and personal habits are reviewed, and professional direction on improved techniques is given, so that you may maintain optimum oral health. Necessary X-rays X-rays help Dr. Wasserman to completely evaluate all areas of you teeth, gums, and jaw Intraoral Photos We use the latest technology which allows us to capture and print magnified photos of your teeth and gums. In addition to helping Dr. Wasserman in his complete diagnosis, these photos let you see any problems that exist in your mouth. Study Models To allow complete evaluation, we sometimes will take impressions of your teeth and make solid “models” of your teeth and gums. Consultation Follow-up Through complete diagnosis, Dr. Wasserman is able to determine the condition of your teeth and gums. After the doctor reviews all notes, x-rays, and models, you may meet with him for an additional consultation visit to discuss your dental health and Dr. Wasserman’s recommendations.
